Have you found communication to be frustrating? Do you try to work out conflicts with your loved ones or those particularly difficult people in your life only to find yourself suddenly in a quarrel?

When we find ourselves in an unexpected argument it’s easy to speak without thinking about how our words come across.

Proverbs 13:18 says “rash words” are like “sword thrusts.”

Rash words are spoken without thought or careful consideration.

When careless words come out of our mouth it is like stabbing someone over and over again. Click To Tweet

Ouch!I

I love this quote by Stormie Omartian:

The best way to have good communication with your spouse is to first be in good communication with God.

Recently, I’ve been studying and reading about how to communicate better. Although I knew the Bible had great advice about how we use our words, I had no idea just how many verses there are to help us know how we are to talk to each other and listen.

Communication can be frustrating! Did you know the Bible teaches us how to communicate? Come discover the kind of words we should and shouldn't speak.

I’ve categorized them into two parts: words the Bible says we should speak and words we shouldn’t.

I found these words using English Standard Version and New International Version Bible references. If you think of any more words/verses I would love for you to add them in the comments!

Communication is more about serving God’s will than it is your own. It’s more about doing what’s right than deciding who’s right. Stormie OMartian

A few months ago my husband and I memorized some of these verses on our own and recited one verse to each other during the week. Even if your spouse isn’t interested in reading the verses, give it a try for yourself.

I also sought out a Christian psychologist who could help my husband and I learn how to communicate better. Sometimes we bring distorted ways of thinking into our marriage along with bad habits in the way we communicate, and we need counsel to help to work through issues that divide us.

I’ve also written 31 Days of Mending Marriage Prayers because I believe in the power of prayer to help restore marriages.

If you are in an emotionally/verbally abusive marriage please find professional help. You will need support to gain strength and confidence to set boundaries, move forward in wisdom, and find healing.
