“God is an audacious story teller. God has a great story to write about you and part of that story is you telling yours!” Tosca Lee
I attended the West Coast Christian Writer’s Conference a few weeks ago. It was so amazing to hear Michele Cushatt, author of Undone and I Am, share her testimony of battling tongue cancer. I loved learning about her writing journey and how she wanted to give up so many times, but didn’t.
She said,
“Writing is a means to understand the life we’ve been given. We write to know ourselves and we write to know each other. Writing untangles our life like the untangling of a necklace. It reveals what’s there.”
Although I have been mainly interested in reading nonfiction, after I heard author Tosca Lee speak, I couldn’t wait to purchase some of her fiction books. I was captivated by her words and the way she presented herself.
When I started blogging two years ago, I never knew how much I had to learn in order to keep up with my blog. Really, all I wanted to do was write what I felt God was placing on my heart. But I discovered that part of the ministry of writing included learning new skills. I needed to learn how to find my own writing voice, how to meet the needs of my readers, how to present my website in a way that drew people in, how to make graphics, how to create and grow an email list by providing a freebie through an opt-in, how to use social media and so much more! And to be honest, I still have so much more to learn.
It can be so frustrating when I don’t know how to figure something out—just like trying to untangle a knotted up necklace.
And yet, if we persevere, we will see the fruits of our labor.
About 4 months into blogging I made one of my biggest investments and joined Elite Blog Academy. This course is a comprehensive learning process that guides you through 4 modules so you can learn how to 1. Refine Your Message 2. Grow Your Traffic 3. Monetize Your Platform and 4. Build Your Business.
I actually wish I had enrolled sooner because after I started the course, I ended up completely changing my theme and having a logo designed. EBA helped me learn how to use social media and create a recognizable standard for my graphics.
The course is comprehensive and you can work through modules at your own pace. I also love that whenever EBA updates their content you get free access to the new material.
I asked someone at the conference what led her to write and she told me she just couldn’t not write.
I think a lot of writers feel that way. I’ve met so many people who want to start blogging as a ministry but just don’t know how to do all the other things that go along with it.
Since I knew that I couldn’t NOT write, I was determined to put forth the extra time to learn. I discovered that in order to educate myself, I had to invest some money into my craft.
Although I consider my blog a ministry, I wanted to learn how to make some money in order to offset some of the costs required to keep it up. I also wanted to learn how to grow my blog so that my message would reach more people.
Enrollment for Elite Blog Academy only opens ONCE each year, and will only be open for five days, beginning today! That means that if you are ready to finally take your blog to the next level, you should sign up ASAP! I’ve heard great things about the course, but just not the right time for me. Enjoy!!
“And yet, if we persevere, we will see the fruits of our labor.” I’m currently reading the book “Grit” and the author would wholeheartedly endorse your statement. Not giving up is so crucial to accomplishing anything. Thanks for sharing this, Valerie, and may God continue to bless your blog as you invest in your skills!
Valerie- thanks for pointing out EBA! I’m already enrolled and enjoying Unit 2 in Module 1. I have so much to learn:)

Valerie – I found you today at Deb’s link up count your blessings where we are neighbors. I was blessed to see you are an EBA alumni too. I so love what you shared today about writing our stories and how it is important for us to share… I’ve sort of being writing on the same topic as well. I love the quote you shared about “writing is a means to understand the life we’ve been given” so, so true. Ok, so I am not sure I have ever heard of the West Coast Christian Writer’s Conference.. where is it at? I live in the PNW and west coast is much closer to me than the ones I’ve been attending on the East Coast all these years. I am going to attend the Mt Hermon Conf in April. Also, I would love if you would consider linking up to my NEW Thursday Party #TuneInThursday it stays open until Sunday. You can find it here: https://debbiekitterman.com/new-linkup-tune-in-thursday-1-who-is-your-god/

Thank you so much for sharing your link up. I just added your button to my link-up page. The West Coast Christian Conference was in Pleasanton, California. Some day I would love to go to She Speaks, but like you said it’s SO far for me. I would love to go to the Mt. Hermon Conference as well. I’m hoping to go in 2018. It’s so great to meet you!
Valerie – Pleasanton, CA not too bad considering I am west coast. I did love SheSpeaks and if you ever get the chance to go you should, but it sounds like you have a ton of great options right near you too. (lucky 🙂 ) LOL thanks for linking up to #TuneInThursday this week. I look forward to seeing you this next week too.
Thanks for sharing this on #FreshmarketFriday! I enjoyed reading it!
Thank you for stopping by Kimberly!
I’ve learned some great tips just from Ruth Soukup’s emails. It’s funny but whenever I go to Chapters/Indigo bookstores (the Barnes & Noble of Canada) my book is always right beside hers! Soukup, then Stahl. One day I’ll take the course but right now I’m just working on three online courses and can’t add another. 🙁
that conference must have been amazing! I love what Michelle said:
“Writing is a means to understand the life we’ve been given. We write to know ourselves and we write to know each other. Writing untangles our life like the untangling of a necklace. It reveals what’s there.”
Praying you experience a greater anointing in writing this year!

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment and stop by. How. exciting to see your book on a bookshelf! Your book looks wonderful too. I would love to read it and add it to my list!
I’m so intrigued by this course! However, I’ll have to pray to see if it’s right for me and save up for next year. I’m hearing many good things.
Yes, it’s a big investment for sure and it’s not always the best financial timing.
Thanks for the encouragement. Although it becomes discouraging at times, God always reminds me that it is all worth it even if it impacts only ONE person. I must say, I have learned tons about personal perseverance along the way. God bless you!
Me too Tania! I love it when I receive a comment from someone who received encouragement from a post. It’s such a great ministry!
I’ve heard such great things about this course, thanks for giving us an insider’s perspective!
Thanks Sarah!
I was supposed to go to the conference but had something come up and I chose to be where I was needed. Thank you for sharing a little bit about it. I wish I could have been there. I loved Michelle’s words.
“Writing is a means to understand the life we’ve been given. We write to know ourselves and we write to know each other. Writing untangles our life like the untangling of a necklace. It reveals what’s there.”
I’m sorry you couldn’t make it to the conference. Where are you from? It was fun meeting some writers who live near me. I look forward to going to the conference when it comes again. Thank you for taking the time to comment. Have a great day!
