Girl to Girl is a 60-day mother-daughter devotional to help draw your relationship closer and deepen your faith. My friend, Stacey Pardoe, wrote this book with her daughter Bekah. I was eager to get started, but honestly, I didn’t think my daughters would be interested in doing a devotional with me. Every mom wants to have healthy conversations with their teen, but sometimes our efforts meet with rolling teen eyes, right?
So first, I began to pray for my children to be willing to read this devotional with me. I felt the Lord prompting my heart to make time for it, even if they said they didn’t want to. But God answered my prayers, and the perfect opportunity presented itself to introduce the devotional.
I was sitting on the couch writing on my laptop one evening when my 12-year-old stood before me, opened her arms and asked for a hug. I have three older teens and have been struggling with the fact that they don’t like to hug me anymore. So at first, I thought, ok, what do you want, or what did you break?
“I just need a hug.”
My heart melted, and I put my laptop aside, got up, and held her close. I looked down on the chair in the formal and saw the book.
“I have the perfect devotional for us to do together.” And she happily agreed.
Each devotional begins with a verse, a commentary from Stacey (called “mom’s thoughts”), a commentary from Bekah (called “Girl to Girl”), several discussion questions, a prayer, and a journaling section. I read “mom’s thoughts,” and Meghan read “Girl to Girl.” Both Meghan and I related to their perspectives. In fact, Bekah’s writing even sounded the way my daughter talks. The questions had a natural way of opening up the conversation. We talked about our fears, failures, hopes, and dreams. God opened the doors, and I was blown away by Meghan’s responsiveness to this book. The topics are pertinent, the devotions engaging, and the questions naturally lead to conversation. I will never forget my time reading this devotional with my daughter.
Valerie, we can’t thank you enough for your kind words. Even more, we are praising God for the way he is using this book! You’ve done so much to encourage us and spread our words. Thank you!!!!
