How to pray for an undivided heart This post shares different ways we can pray to have undivided hearts for God.

If you have been following my blog, you know I’m passionate about sharing how fearing the Lord helps us learn to trust in God when we are afraid.

The theme of fearing the Lord is prevalent throughout the Bible. To learn how to fear the Lord, the Bible says our hearts must not be divided. For our hearts not to be divided, we need to learn how to guard our hearts. I wrote this post about why we should guard our hearts. and this post about what we should guard our hearts against.

Now I’d like to share with you specific ways to pray to have an undivided heart so we can learn to trust in God completely.

Pray for God to examine your heart and mind.

Whenever I take time to be still before the Lord and ask the Lord to examine my heart and mind, I become aware of all my worries I need to surrender to God.  When life feels like too much to handle, I tend to run from God instead of taking the time to be real with him. When I pour out my heart to the Lord, I open my heart up to the comforting work of the Holy Spirit.

Test me, Lord and try me. Examine my heart and mind. Psalm 26:2

Pray for the Lord to transform your mind and renew your thoughts with truth.

My mind tends to gravitate towards the decline of this world, my body, my health, and my circumstances. Negative emotions usually follow. When I renew my mind with the truth found in God’s Word, my thoughts align with hope. The character of God fills the gaps wherever I have struggles in life. My emotions then follow as God’s peace is greater than any trouble and beyond all understanding.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind that by testing, you may discern what is the will of God, what is acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

Pray for a clean heart and an attitude adjustment

Jeremiah 17:9 tells us that the heart is deceitful. When I pray for a clean heart, my bad attitude becomes apparent. Grumpiness, bitterness, and negativity fade by the power of the Holy Spirit and the truth of God’s Word.

How to pray for an undivided heart This post shares different ways we can pray to have undivided hearts for God.

Pray for God to know your heart and anxious thoughts

Sometimes being anxious becomes a way of life for us. God always knows what we are anxious about. Praying about our concerns helps us surrender our worries to God. Psalm 138:8 assures us that God will accomplish what concerns us.

Search me, God, and know my heart; Test me and know my anxious thoughts. Psalm 139:23

Pray for God to show your sin so you can confess it and repent

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to tell when somebody other than yourself has a bad attitude, is being rude, selfish, or stubborn? It’s a lot harder to see sin in ourselves. That’s why it’s important to ask God to reveal our sins to us.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John: 8-9

Pray for God’s peace to guard your heart

God promises that his peace will guard our hearts and minds. We can release our burdens to God and ask for him to give us peace that surpasses our ability to understand.

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

Pray for Scripture to transform your life and help turn you away from sin.

Before you spend time reading the Bible, ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you.

I have hidden your Word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11

Pray to trust in the Lord with all of your heart.

Am I trusting in the Lord with my whole heart? When I admit and confess that I have been relying on my own understanding and not trusting in God, I initiate change. The Holy Spirit empowers us to trust in God.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways, submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3: 5-6

Pray for wisdom

Pray for your life to reflect your love for the Lord.

Does my life reflect how much I love the Lord? What areas of my life do not give glory to God?

As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart. Proverbs 27:19

Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12

The Holy Spirit empowers you to have an undivided heart.

Remember, when you become a Christian, God places his Holy Spirit in your heart. The Holy Spirit gives you the power and strength to have an undivided heart for God!

Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

2 Corinthians 1:21-22

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in this present age but also in the one to come.

Ephesians 1:18-21

Take a few moments and ask God to show you where your heart is divided.

Has God revealed an area in your life you would like prayer for? Write your request in the comments, and I’ll write a prayer for you.
